Een klein jaar geleden hadden we al deel 1 behandeld van Vikings. De serie is bij veel mensen goed bevallen en vandaar dat we vandaag seizoen 2 even kort behandelen. Want 1 ding staat natuurlijk centraal bij vikingen, de baard.
Vikings krijgt een goede overall score. Volgens IMDB is het een 8.6 waard. Dat zegt toch wel wat voor een serie. Seizoen twee volgt de lotgevallen van Ragnar, de strijdvaardige Viking die nu een gerespecteerd leider is geworden op het slagveld en ernaast. Maar meer macht betekent ook tal van dodelijke gevaren en dilemma’s. Terwijl hij zich schrap zet om de degens te kruisen met zijn eigen broer Rollo, is Ragnar verscheurd tussen zijn vrouw Lagertha en zijn minnares, prinses Aslaug. Zijn zoon Bjorn, intussen een jongeman en een woeste krijger, bevindt zich tussen twee vuren. Tussendoor valt Ragnar stoutmoedig het Engelse koninkrijk binnen, een gebied met immense schatten en een verraderlijke koning die de ultieme bedreiging kan vormen. (bol.com). Q: Michael Hirst very much takes history seriously and your character for example is based on a mythological Norse character. Do you feel any pressure to live up to that or are you given free reign?
A: Like you just said, Ragnar is mythological, and some people don’t even know if I’m a real character or not. It’s a drama, and history is great. There is a lot of better stuff in history. But unfortunately even historians disagree with each other about Viking history, and so there is no definite thing. So we want to entertain.
It’s different than with any of the World Wars, because everybody knows exactly what happened. The truth is always better than the stuff you can make up. Nobody knows exactly what happened with the Vikings, and so we have a bit of creative leeway to make it a bit more entertaining. All the wars span over a few years, whereas the Vikings span over a long period of time, and so you have to do time jumps, where you skip to the more interesting stories. Even Rollo, although I forget which one it is, we’re something like one hundred years apart. We didn’t exist together; we weren’t brothers, but he is a great character. Everybody in the show is a great character, and we’ve just tried to put all the great Viking characters in history together.
Q: Being schooled in Australia, outside of the raping and the pillaging part, did you learn much else about the Vikings?
A: Yeah, that was my favourite part… [Laughs] That’s all I learned. I’ve actually learnt more on this show, even with the first script.
I’m not into the whole research thing unless you are playing a character that’s modern and who you know a lot about – whether you can see a video of him or I am able to just inform myself. But Michael’s scripts are so informative so that’s where I get all my affects.
Q: Is one of the most enjoyable things about being on a show such as Vikings the opportunity to get in touch with the past – to even touch the past in some ways?
A: It’s very enjoyable, and the set decoration, the costumes and everything else really helps us as actors to become involved in that world. When we do it, we really do row the boats, and they are real horses.
